Pace Teachers' Meet
To mark the momentous occasion of the 25th year milestone of PACE, the Hindustan Times organized the Annual PACE Teachers’ Meet on Monday, 20th March 2023 at Shangri-la Eros. The theme of the day was ‘Retro Rewind with Masters.’ The event which was exclusively held for teachers witnessed some quirky and fun performances. 500 teachers from various schools unwound in a meet-and-greet session. The highlights of the meet were - a ‘Supernatural Show’ by Mystery Man, Abhishek Acharya and a ‘Limelight Medley’, a groovy Karaoke by KJ Subz. The enthralling event concluded with a sumptuous lunch and souvenir distribution. It was indeed a very rejuvenating and invigorating session.
Cambridge Curriculum Orientation Programme
An orientation programme was conducted in the Multipurpose Hall of DPS Vasant Kunj on 17th March 2023 for the parents and the team of teachers, on Cambridge Curriculum being followed alongside CBSE curriculum. The programme was graced by the school Headmistress – Ms. Malini K Sengupta. It began with a brief introduction of the resource person from Cambridge International Education- Ms. Prachi Mehta, by the Cambridge Coordinator, DPS Vasant Kunj, Ms. Anju Kaistha. Ms. Mehta is heading the marketing team of Northern Central India and has an experience of 12 years.She discussed the various aspects of Cambridge Curriculum which included the following-
- Why to implement Cambridge Curriculum in DPS Vasant Kunj
- The history of Cambridge International, part of Cambridge University
- Its expanse all over the world and partners with various Govt. Ministries over 40 countries
- The recognition worldwide, granted equivalence by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and various schools in India following the curriculum.
- A specimen of report card tailor made for Indian schools reflecting grades and marks.
- Offer March Series exams only in India to sync with the CBSE Curriculum followed in India.
- Based on the learning objectives, follow different system of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment patterns which develop the skills, moral values, critical thinking, problem- solving skills and application of deeper knowledge gained.

Workshop on Cambridge Early Years
A workshop on Cambridge Early Years was organised on 15th March 2023 at Delhi Public School, Dwarka. It was attended by Ms. Anubha Tiwary, Ms. Jyoti Sansanwal, Ms. Aakansha Sharma, Ms. Aashna Virmani, Ms. Arpita Nigam, and Ms. Kritika Satija from the junior school. The guest speakers of the workshop were Ms. Chitika Rose and Mr. Akash Rout from Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE).
The workshop was attended by 43 teachers from six Delhi Public Schools across Delhi/NCR. Teachers of DPS-Dwarka, DPS- Faridabad, DPS- East of Kailash, DPS- Vasant Vihar, and DPS- Vasant Kunj participated in the workshop.
The workshop aimed at orienting teachers from various schools on how the Cambridge Curriculum works using various learning methods and processes in different learning environments. It also aimed to orient teachers on how to implement the curriculum in early years and what are the prerequisites for implementing the curriculum.
An insight into the curriculum was provided by the facilitators which included an approach to education, practical strategies, and activities that can be planned in a classroom.
Cambridge early years programme focuses on children of the age group three to six and has been designed keeping in mind the Indian context. It is a comprehensive, high-quality programme that includes a holistic curriculum, engaging classroom resources and assessment approaches to measure learners’ progress. The curriculum encourages a flexible and child-centric approach. It strives to create a balance of physical, cognitive, language & communication, social & emotional development of a child. It also allows learners to develop at their own pace.
The first part of the workshop focused on the 12 key principles of the programme. The programme aims to provide a high-quality curriculum and is also aligned with the National Education Policy 2020.
Cambridge early years has been divided into the following six curriculum areas-
1. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
2. Communication, Language and Literacy
3. Physical Development
4. Mathematics
5. Understanding the World
6. Creative expression
For the learners in each level, a set of three books would be provided-
1. Skill book- for in-class learning and activities
2. Workbook- For literacy and numeracy
3. Rhyme book- to convey the objectives of the curriculum through rhymes.
For the teachers at each level, a teacher’s book with a detailed explanation of each learning statement and its accompanying activity, method of instruction and requisite resources would be provided.
Support material in the form of home links will be provided for the parents with activities to involve them in the teaching-learning process.
In the last part of the workshop, the teachers were navigated through the school support hub platform. All the steps to access the relevant documents available were explained in detail.
Suggestions on how to make the transition smooth for the learners who would join the Cambridge curriculum directly in Year 2 were also provided in the session. At the end of the workshop, a list of important documents which would help the teachers in getting a deeper understanding of the curriculum was also provided. The workshop was enriching and insightful.
Programme In Primary Mathematics
The Human Resource Development Centre, DPSS organised a workshop on “Programme in Primary Mathematics” from February 10 – February 12, 2023 at Human Resource Development Centre, Knowledge Park V, Greater Noida. It was a residential programme attended by 47 teachers from Delhi Public School across the country. Ms. Sonia Sharma from the junior school attended the workshop.
Day 1 began with the Inaugural Ceremony which was inaugurated by Ms. Vanita Sehgal, Executive Director, HRDC, DPSS along with Ms. Sudeshna , Ms. Neeta Kumar and Ms. Jyoti Sharma. It was followed by the informative and interactive sessions which were conducted by Dr. Rakhi Banerjee, Associate Professor Azim Premji University, Bangalore. The topics covered during the sessions were:
* Introduction and setting the context of Word problems
* Exploring the algorithms of the Four Mathematical Operations
* Understanding the properties of Numbers and Operations.
Dr. Rakhi explained the importance of numbers and how maths provides a particular way of thinking and building number sense in young minds. She also stressed upon the need of analysing the word problems comprehensively rather than looking at the key words.
The resource persons of the sessions of Day 2, February 11, 2023, were Ms. Pooja and Mr. Bawanjit, Jodo Gyan Shikha, Delhi. The following areas of Math were covered by them:
* Fractional number sense, understanding unit and common fraction
* Role of Equivalence in addition and subtraction of fraction
* Visualising relationships between fractions and decimals
* Understanding decimal numbers through meaningful context.
They explained the above mentioned topics with the help of various Jodo Gyan hands on activities and worksheets.
Day 3 began with a session on Geometry and Mensuration which was conducted by Dr. Hemant Kumar Singh, Associate Program, Department of Mathematics, Delhi University.It was followed by a session on Measurement and Metric System by Dr. Jyoti Bhola, Professor, Department of Mathematics, Delhi University.
In an effort to lay a strong foundation in Mathematics,the main focus of the above sessions was to facilitate the educators and give deeper insight into the concepts of Geometry, Mensuration and Metric System and their need. All the sessions were very informative.The participants interacted with the resource persons at length and also shared their Best Teaching Practice with all.
To rejuvenate the participants, a yoga session was also held on February 11,2023. The programme ended on Day 3, 12th February,2023. with a Valedictory Ceremony wherein all the participants were given the Participation Certificates.
It was an enlightening and enriching programme for all the attendees.
Cambridge Resources Workshop
A workshop on New Cambridge Resources in Primary and Lower Secondary Classes for Mathematics, English and Science was organised on 2nd February, 2023 in The Park Hotel. It was attended by Ms. Nidhi Gupta, Ms. Ritu Arora, Ms. Anchal Trehan and Ms. Ibtesham from the junior school. The guest speakers of the workshop were Mr. Simon Lind, Senior International education advisor and trainer with Cambridge Schools, a division of Cambridge University Press and Assessment for past 25 years and Ms. Jaishree Nair, Course Author, Academic Advocacy, Human Capital Development, Career Analyst.
The workshop aimed at orienting teachers from various schools on how the Cambridge Curriculum works using various learning methods and processes in different learning environments. It aimed to provide hands on experience to the attendees which could be further practised with students at Primary and Lower Secondary Level. The teachers got involved in doing various tasks which included critical and analytical thinking, while focussing on a learner-centric approach.
MOCK EVACUATION DRILL
REPORT
In consonance with the directive received from National Disaster Management Authority and Directorate of Education(DOE), a Mock Evacuation drill was conducted in DPS Vasant Kunj on Wednesday,13th April,2022. The drill was conducted in three blocks of the school viz. A-Block, B-Block and D-Block. A hooter was rung without prior warning at 9:15 am. The teachers and students acted promptly. They stopped all the activities they were engaged in, lined up and evacuated the building in an orderly manner to assemble in the designated assembly area. The entire drill was successfully completed in 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
Topic: Say No to Bullying
A counselling session on “Say No to Bullying” was conducted for the students of class V in the Mini-Auditorium by the School Counsellors, Ms. Surpreet Oberoi and Ms. Boski Sharma on 23rd November,2022. With the help of a story, the students were made to understand about identifying different kinds of bullying and how it affects them. They were further made aware on what to do when they face such a situation. They were also introduced to a set of students who have been identified as “Peace Pals”, and they can be contacted at the time of problem. It was an interactive session wherein the students shared their experiences and enjoyed a short movie which was about accepting individual differences, how to remain happy and have a positive self-image.
Raising Self Motivated Children and ECCE and NEP 2020
An online workshop was conducted by Ms. Rupali Sehgal and Ms. Anubha Tiwary on the topics- “Raising Self Motivated Children” and “Early Childhood Care and Education and NEP 2020 on 18th November,2022. The webinar was organised for the teachers teaching primary classes. It was attended by 78 teachers.
The first part of the webinar was conducted by Ms Rupali and it was based on her learning from the webinar organised by DPSS-HRDC on 15th September 2022. The session emphasised on the importance of motivation, the need of motivation and how to raise self-motivated children. It also stressed on types of motivation and kinds of encouragement to develop motivation. It was an interactive session and the focal point of discussion was providing our children a nurturing environment inside our classrooms which can help them to grow on their own rather than any extrinsic reward or punishment.
The second part of the webinar was conducted by Ms. Anubha Tiwary and the aim of this session was to share her learning from the “ECCE workshop organised by DPSS-HRDC”.
Ms Anubha, in her session, briefed the teachers about child development in early years and explained the important factors that affect a child’s overall development. She discussed about the role of primary teachers as caregivers and their roles as facilitators of learning and creating environment for holistic development of children. She also gave an insight of NEP-2020 and its key factors to keep in mind while developing the new curriculum for new session, as per the NEP-2020.
It was an interactive session wherein the attendees shared their views and experiences, and expressed their concerns about NEP-2020.
Training in Effective Communication Skills
Communication skill is the ability to convey and share information to others in an efficacious way. To apprise the teachers of the importance of communication skills, a webinar was organized by the DPSS-HRDC on 11th and 12th May, 2022. The same session was conducted by Ms. Tanika Vasudeva for the teachers of the junior school on Saturday, 12th November, 2022. The topic of the webinar was- Training in Effective Communication Skills. The emphasis was laid on the importance of effective communication skills. It was followed by a detailed discussion on the 8C’s of communication, the barriers in communication, the basic emotions and strategies to manage emotions and how the teachers need to be not only good educators, but great mentors. The session was appreciated by all present there.
English Teahing Across The Curriculum
An online workshop on ‘English Teaching Across the Curriculum ‘was conducted by Ms. Kamiya Kapoor on 12th November, 2022 for the teachers of the Junior school.
The key points discussed were-
1. Addressing the needs of bilingual students.
2. Barriers that the students are facing while learning English.
3. The concept of BICS and CALP was reviewed.
4. Reforms introduced by the NEP over the years were analyzed.
5. Impact of language barrier while learning the other subjects.
6. Activities that can be done by the subject teachers to help the students develop vocabulary and equip the bilingual learners with the effective listening and speaking skills.
The session was interactive and fruitful for the attendees.
Gender Issues and Concerns in School Education and I Thrive: Looking after your mind
A session was conducted by Ms. Surpreet Oberoi and Ms. Boski Sharma on the topic “Gender issues and concerns in school education” and “I thrive: Looking after your mind”. The same sessions were attended by them as a part of training sessions organized by DPS Society HRD centre.
Ms. Surpreet, spoke about how we can achieve gender inclusive class rooms from early years in a child’s life. She further elaborated how through our teaching practices we can challenge the gender stereotypes, patriarchal notions and remove gender discrimination. It was a very informative session which has brought in a new perspective towards seeing gender roles in a society. Through curriculum changes we can bring gender equality in the society so that everyone gets an equal opportunity and the power to shape their own lives.It was indeed a very enriching experience.
Ms Boski, spoke about Mental health: The objective of the workshop was to understand how one can look for its own mind because working towards one physical and mental health is very important.
She started the session with sharing the knowledge about Mental Health-what is it, myths related to it and what areas it affects.
In the second part, she discussed about Mental Health Problems-what are these, how it happens and how it becomes impairment and disorder.
In the end, she shared some tips to help our own selves. Here are they-
1. Accept the context (that there will be risk, change and unfairness) and accept yourself (in terms of knowledge, responsibilities, respect and care)
2. Acknowledge Stress
3. Learn to relax
4. Express feelings
5. Stop unhelpful coping
6. Ways to challenge your negative thoughts-challenging misconceptions about people and own selves
7. Be yourself
The session was well appreciated by the teachers.
Webinar DPSS – HRDC “Measuring a Child’s Progress”
“Children are not things to be moulded, but are people to be unfolded.” – Jess Lair
To apprise the teachers in developing a strong foundation for happy learners and creating a generation of responsible human beings who can map their own progress, DPSS – HRDC organised a workshop on 14th September, 2022 on the topic ‘Measuring a Child’s Progress’. It was conducted by eminent resource persons- Ms Rukmini Ramachandran and Ms. Ruby Lau from the Indian Montessori Foundation along with the co – panelists, Ms. Ramya Sreedhar and Ms. Hemalatha Rangarajan. The workshop was attended by Ms. Anjali Gupta from the junior school.
The interactive workshop laid emphasis on the fact that a society’s future is inextricably intertwined with its children. The world of tomorrow shall inherit the children of today. Thus, it is a moral duty to facilitate and monitor a child’s progress. Educational institutes should provide open opportunities for the same by creating a child friendly, comfortable and welcoming ambience. Efforts should be made on developing age-appropriate curriculum and checklists from early childhood. The strategies of introducing positive early interventions in the child’s physical and mental wellbeing, that make a significant impact on their cognitive abilities in classroom, were shared. Most importantly, progress evaluation should be introduced as a pleasurable activity for children and a guide for enhancing a child friendly teaching- learning environment at school. It was an enriching and insightful webinar.
Webinar DPSS – HRDC “Stories That Children Need”
DPSS-HRDC organised a webinar for teachers on Tuesday, 13 September, 2022. The topic of the webinar was “Stories That Children Need”. Ms Rukmini Ramachandran and Ms Ruby Lau from Indian Montessori foundation conducted the webinar. Around 200 teachers from various branches of DPS attended the webinar. From the junior school, it was attended by Ms Jasmine Narang.
The main objective of the workshop was to understand the importance of storytelling and how it is an intrinsic part of learning for the young minds. The webinar emphasised on inculcating reading habits in children as reading stories give wings of imagination to learners and prepare them for life.
The webinar reinforced the importance of reading stories and preparing teachers to set up an environment for developing the love and joy for it. It was a fruitful and valuable experience for all the participants as it helped them to understand that reading stories to children is far beyond vocabulary, language and entertainment and is a lot about inner centre, minds and emotions.
Webinar DPSS – HRDC “ Work and Play in a Child’s Life”
DPSS – HRDC organised a webinar on “ Work and Play in a Child’s Life” on 12th September, 2022. The resource persons of the workshop were Ms. Rukmini Ramachandran and Ms. Ruby Lau from Indian Montessori Foundation along with co panelist Ms. Ramya Sreedhar and Ms. Hemalatha Rangarajan. From the Junior School, it was attended by Ms. Gitika Sehgal.
The online session began with understanding the significance of Early Childhood Education and its implications in shaping the foundation years of young learners.
The session emphasised on the deeper insight to the terms “work” and “play” in a child’s life and how they are interlinked and correlated. It helped in understanding that play is learning and work is fun and further focussed on explaining that ‘work is a play of every child’ . In order to make a child interested in work or play its important to engage them with the right level of challenge, according to their capacity and capability. Every experience that a child goes through while learning helps in creating their character and personality. This in turn helps them to become confident, independent, and happy learners.
The training programme was an enriching experience which will help in making the teaching learning process more fruitful and effective.
Online Session on- Parenting Tips- Post COVID Times
Covid 19 has brought in a lot of changes in everyone’s life and especially in children as they are struggling to cope up with the pressure of offline classes. To give an insight into the various challenges faced in the classrooms and strategies to handle them, an online session was conducted for the parents of the students of classes Prep, I and II, by the junior school Counsellors Ms. Surpreet Oberoi and Ms. Boski Sharma, on 3rd September,2022 on the topic- ‘Parenting Tips- Post COVID Times’.
In the session they discussed various aspects regarding the child’s developmental goals and how we can help the child in bridging the gap. Different behavioural concerns were also discussed along with the remedial steps to be taken. Furthermore, they gave suggestions on how children can be motivated to learn better and cope up with the present situation. It was an informative and enriching session.
Orientation - Cambridge International Curriculum
Delhi Public School Vasant Kunj organised an orientation session on 27th August, 2022, for the parents of classes Nursery to 1 to familiarize them to “Cambridge International Curriculum”, that the school proposes to introduce from the academic session 2023-24.
The headmistress, Mrs Malini Sengupta, in her welcome address to the parents talked about the need and importance of adopting the Cambridge International program. She laid emphasis on how this curriculum will set a global standard for education for our students, honing their developmental skills and preparing them for a bright future.
This was followed by a presentation to introduce the Cambridge International Curriculum by Mrs. Anju Kaistha. The parents were familiarised with the basic elements and key principles that lie at the heart of the Cambridge curriculum, the Cambridge pathway which prepares students for life-helping them to develop an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning, areas of the curriculum and the positive impact of curriculum on students which makes them responsible, reflective, innovative and engaged. The presentation emphasised upon the purpose of introducing the new curriculum so as to provide best education and growth opportunities to the children of the school, nurturing them with love and care to build a strong foundation for their glorious future.
The orientation session ended with an interactive question-answer session with the parents where the parents’ concerns were answered.
Finding Solutions Together
An online workshop on ‘Finding Solutions Together’ was organized by special educators-counsellor of the junior school Ms. Boski and Ms. Surpreet, for teachers teaching Classes Nursery to class 2 on 29th July, 2022 the main objective of the workshop was to understand the difficulties children are facing post covid times in the classroom and thus find solutions about them.
They spoke about Disciplinary issues, attention difficulties, lack of social skills, writing, anxiety, etc. and also tried to provide possible solutions to all the problems.
The webinar was an enriching experience for all the teachers including the resource persons as teachers came up with their positive experiences and possible solutions too. The resource persons insisted on that the current times is not to ask the children to strive but to survive and focus on their own mental health too because when we are fine, we do things right.
Teachers appreciated the workshop.
Handling Challenging Classrooms Post Covid 19
A workshop was conducted by Spl-Educator/Counselors of junior school Ms. Surpreet Oberoi and Ms. Boski Sharma 28th, July ,2022 on the Topic - Handling Challenging Classrooms Post Covid 19 for the teachers teaching Classes III-V
As we all are aware that Covid 19 has brought in a lot of changes in everyone ‘s life and especially it has affected the children. It has become difficult for the students as well as teachers to cope up with the pressure of offline classes. This workshop was to understand the concerns faced by the teachers in handling children and to give strategies in managing these issues. In the session they discussed various disabilities and strategies were given to handle general and specific behavior issues in a classroom. Further they gave suggestions on how children can be motivated to learn better and cope up with the present situation. It was an informative and enriching session.
Integrating EVS in Primary School
HRDC, DPSS organised a webinar on the topic, ‘Integrating EVS in Primary School’ on 29th July,2022 for the EVS teachers.
Dr. Mona Sedwal, NIEPA, Department of Training and Professional Development in Education, was the resource person for the workshop.
Ms. Komal Goomer from the junior school attended the workshop
The key points discussed during the session were-
EVS must be taught as an integrated course for the primary classes. Teaching of EVS should focus on experiential learning that would allow students to explore, experiment and freely express themselves. It must aim to develop curiosity and awareness about the environment. As EVS teachers, it is essential to develop in child a holistic understanding of the environment with the emphasis of inter-relationship of natural and social environment. Students must be sensitised towards social issues through day -to-day experiences and their lifeworld.
It was an interactive session wherein the attendees shared their views and experiences on the innovative techniques employed to teach EVS during covid times. The session also gave an insight into preparing lesson plans and on NEP 2020.
STEAM – Education and Pedagogy: Theory and Practice Case Examples
Delhi Public School Society – HRDC organized an online workshop on “STEAM – Education and Pedagogy:Theory and Practice Case Examples” on 28th July, 2022. Mr. Jukka Miettunen, former Principal Yli-li Comprehensive School, Oulu, Finland, Project Manager, Digione, Founder-STEAMOR, Finland and Mrs. Sari Saleva, Art teacher at a Comprehensive School, STEAM Tutor teacher in the city of Oulu, Finland were the resource persons for the workshop.
Ms. Shaifali Khanna from the junior school attended the workshop. Mr Jukka Miettunen - talked about the secrets of success in education in Finland and how they are able to adopt and implement the different pedagogical approaches. He explained schools all over the world need to change so that students are well prepared for real life challenges and are able to develop their co-operative and technological skills.
Mrs Sari Saleva-talked about how STEAM teaching is helpful and most effective when it is part of the school’s curriculum work and how this multi-disciplinary approach can be helpful in developing the transversal skills of group work, collaboration, learning by doing, to be able to understand how to build a sustainable future and find and evaluate information in different situations. She gave an example of – ‘Mummification Project – Ancient Egypt’ which was given to students in her school. Through this she explained how STEAM is used to develop the various skills in students and how they are assessed too.
Participants were also given a chance to give their opinion on what is the most important skill a student should train in and why?
The webinar culminated with answers and suggestions given by the panelists to the queries of participants on how Arts can be integrated in certain topics in the curriculum. The information given in the webinar was very insightful.
Socio Emotional Learning
DPSS - HRDC organized a webinar on Friday, 22nd July, 2022. The topic of the session was ‘Socio Emotional Learning’. Ms. Boski Sharma from the junior school, attended the workshop. Professor Asha Singh, Guest Faculty at Azim Premji University, Visiting Faculty for Arts in Education and Ambedkar University, Delhi was the resource person of the workshop. The main objective of the workshop was to understand about Social Emotional Learning post covid times in schools. Professor Asha Singh interacted with the participants and elucidated the topic very well in detail including the following topics- Development specific expectations, Changes in covid time and post covid times in children, Class behaviour, adjustments, etc. and intervention possible in today’s scenario.
The webinar was an enriching experience for all the participants as it helped them understand the current scenario and relatable experiences in school regarding children. It helped understanding the possible solutions and intervention that can work. The most important outcome of the workshop was to understand that the current times is not to ask children to strive but to survive and we all need to come together for the solutions.
How to make Mathematics interesting and integrating it with other subjects
HRDC, DPSS conducted an online training session on 21st July 2022. The topic of the session was ‘How to make Mathematics interesting and integrate it with other subjects’
Ms. Sonia Sharma from the junior school attended the workshop. Dr. Sharad Sinha, Department of Teacher Education, NIE, NCERT was the resource person of the webinar.
Dr. Sinha, emphasized on
-the need to reduce maths anxiety by giving children time to think, imagine and experiment.
-upon developing various competencies by making use of games software, anchor charts etc.. She also highlighted that the teaching should be child centric wherein incentives should be given to the children for completing a particular task, fun activities should be given to early finishers, small breaks should be given, and 360°Assessment Policy meaning assessment by teachers, parents, friends and society should be followed.
It was an enlightening and insightful session.
Capacity Building Program on NEP 2020
CBSE, CoE Delhi East conducted an offline Capacity Building Program on NEP 2020 at Suraj Bhan DAV Public School, Vasant Vihar on 23rd July, 2022. Dr. Meenakshi Gupta, Principal SD School and Dr. Anuradha Rai, Principal Vasant Valley School, were the resource speakers at the workshop. Ms. Meenakshi Malhotra from the junior school attended the workshop.
The resource person emphasized that NEP 2020 is envisioned at transforming Indian Education System by 2040, building it as globally the best education system rooted in Indian ethos, thereby transforming India into a global knowledge superpower. NEP aims at achieving Universal Foundational Literacy and Numeracy in primary schools and quality education including vocational education from preschool to grade 12.
It also gave an insight into the Mandate of NEP,2020 which lays a particular emphasis on the development of the creative potential in everyone, by making the current Education System holistic, flexible and multi-disciplinary.
It was an informative and an interactive workshop.
Fractional Number Sense
HRDC, DPSS organised a webinar on 20th July 2022 on FRACTIONAL NUMBER SENSE. It was attended by Ms. Rohini Parmar, junior school teacher. The training session was conducted by Mr Shaji and Ms Komal from Jodo Gyan. Jodo Gyan is a non-profit making organisation working in the field of designing innovative methods and techniques for teaching mathematics since past 22 years. The session focussed on teaching fractions in ways relatable to children, by means of drawing, paper folding and Jodo Gyan mathematical kits.
Interesting games like ‘Complete the cake’ were played which demonstrated how a complete figure can be made using pieces of different sizes which were actually different fractions. Thus, devising an interesting way of teaching fractions to children where children actually see the fractions they’re dealing with.
Overall a very informative and interesting workshop
Nurturing Creativity in the Classroom
An online webinar was organized by HRDC, DPSS on 19th July, 2022 on Nurturing Creativity in the Classroom. The resource person of the session was Dr. Karen Hosack James, Senior Lecturer at the Oxford Brookes University, UK School of Education. Webinar was attended by Ms. Meenakshi Dixit from the junior school.
Dr. James talked about how Art makes children powerful and can help in promoting the moral, cultural and physical development of students. He suggested that the teachers should encourage students to learn things experientially and create a special bond with the children so that learning and teaching become more creative and fun.
English Teaching Across the Curriculum
HRDC, DPSS, organised an webinar on English Teaching across Curriculum for the teachers on 18th July, 2022. Dr.Varada Nikalne , Professor at the Department of Elementary Education, NCERT, was the resource speaker for the workshop. Ms. Kamiya Kapoor from the junior school attended the webinar
The key points discussed during the session were-
Recommendations of the Bullock Report which provided an insight into how to improve all the aspects of teaching English – reading, writing, and speech through continuous in -service training. The resource person also emphasized on attainment of basic proficiency and development of language as an instrument for basic interpersonal communication and later for abstract thoughts and knowledge acquisition. Dr. Varada suggested introduction of Multidimensional Report cards to track the growth of the students.
The session also gave an insight on BICS – Basic Interpersonal Communication Skill, CALP- Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency and NEP 2020.
NEP 2020 and Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum in Early Child Care and Education
To share the learning from the workshop attended at HRDC, DPSS by Ms Anubha Tiwary, an online session was conducted on 8th July,2022 to apprise the teachers teaching Classes Nursery - II about NEP 2020 and Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum in Early Child Care and Education. Around 30 teachers attended the session.
Ms. Anubha Tiwary in her session interacted with the teachers and briefed them about the need and overview of NEP-2020 for ECCE. She spoke about the various points which can be taken care of while developing curriculum for the next year. She provided the teachers with the synopsis of “Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum” and its importance in the current scenario. Teachers were briefed about some small changes in their daily schedules which can bring out the best in their children. Some examples from important life skills were also given that can easily be included in the current curriculum.
Early Childhood Care & Education Training Programme-2022
DPSS-HRDC organised a training programme-Early Childhood Care and Education Training Programme, for ten days for the Primary teachers from 8th June to 18th June, 2022. The programme began with an ice-breaking session by the Executive Director of DPSS-HRDC, Ms. Vanita Sehgal. It was followed by the inaugural speech by her and a short address by the Chairman of DPSS, Mr. V.K. Shunglu and Ms. Kiran Nadar, Founder – Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. Around 48 teachers participated in the programme. From the junior school, it was attended by Ms. Anubha Tiwary.
The ten days included comprehensive and interactive sessions explaining Early Childhood Education and NEP 2020; Developmentally appropriate curriculum, Assessment and Screening in ECCE and No Formal Teaching of the 3R’s; Role of Music Education and Therapy sessions for managing ECCE Foundational Literacy and Numeracy; Understanding children with special needs; Value Education in formative years; Nurturing reading skills in early years; Art and Dance for early years; Training in Montessori Pedagogy; Awareness about child rights among caregivers; Theatre skills for early educators; Multiple Intelligence and Multilingual Approach in ECCE. The sessions included various activities, games, group projects which were thoroughly enjoyed by the participants.
The ten-day training programme was an enriching experience for all.
Sensitizing Teachers About Vocational Education
DPSS - HRDC organized a webinar on ‘Sensitizing teachers about Vocational Education’ on Thursday, 19th May 2022. Ms. Madhuri Dubey, Founder, National Skills Network, Bangalore was the resource person of the workshop. Around 100 teachers from various branches of DPS attended the webinar. From the junior school, it was attended by Ms. Boski Sharma.
The main objective of the workshop was to understand about vocational education. The resource person apprised the attendees about the following in detail- Key stakeholders for vocational education, Importance of vocational training, 5 E’s of ecosystem, challenges faced, vocational skills in India, role of the industries in making it a success and NSQF and credit framework. She also shared how it is an inclusive and integrated model with reference to NEP 2020 and skill courses offered by CBSE, that a school can easily start training the teachers for short term vocational courses, offered by various organisations in India.
The webinar was an enriching experience for all the participants as it helped them understand that vocational training cannot just be one option for a low achiever/ or a child from a certain economy background, instead, it can help everyone, open new career opportunities and self-development for all.
“ Teachers Truly Shape The Future of Our Children And Therefore, The Future Of Our Nation”
Of all the different factors which influence the quality of education and its contribution to national development , the quality , competence and character of teachers are undoubtedly the most significant. To apprise the teachers of their role with special reference to NEP 2020 , in educational management , an online webinar was organised by the DPSS-HRDC on 20th May , 2022.It was conducted by Ms. Vineeta Sirohi, professor at National Institute of Educationa Planning and Administration (NIEPA). From the junior school , it was attended by Ms. Meenakshi Malhotra.
The webinar emphasised that the aim of education is not only cognitive development , but also building character and creating holistic and well- rounded individuals equipped with the key 21st century skills.It was an enriching and insightful webinar.
Training in Effective Communication Skill
Communication skill is the ability to convey and share information to others in an efficacious way. To apprise the teachers of the importance of communication skills, a webinar was organized by the DPSS-HRDC on 11th and 12th May, 2022. Around 200 teachers from various branches of DPS all over India participated in the webinar. From the junior school, it was attended by Ms. Tanika Vasudeva. The topic of the webinar was- Training in Effective Communication Skills. It was conducted by Ms. Preeti Ranjan Saha and Mr. A.V. Santosh, Trainers, Princeton Academy, Mumbai. The emphasis was laid on the importance of effective communication skills. It was followed by a detailed discussion on the 8C’s of communication.
Day 2 of the webinar laid emphasis on the effective ways of communication, the basic emotions and strategies to manage emotions and how the teachers need to be not only good educators, but great mentors. It was an enriching and insightful webinar.
Online Training Sessions Technology Inclusive Classrooms Using IBM Skills Built
Delhi public school society human resource development centre conducted on online training sessions on the topic technology inclusive classrooms using IBM skills build. It was a three day series of webinars from 4th May 2022 to 6 may 2022 covering the topics orientation to technology day one power of application development day to and emerging technology day 3. MS Vandana Sharma from junior school attended the winners. The sessions were very informative and give an inside on a plethora of options that can be used for including technology in our classrooms for a productive teaching learning experience.
Orientation Programme Class Nursery Session 2022-23
The Orientation programme for the parents of class Nursery, session 2022- 23 was held on 6th and 7th April 2022 in the mini auditorium in the ‘D’ block. The programme was conducted in 2 batches. First set of the parents attended the session on 6th April 2022, Wednesday and the other half attended on 7th April 2022, Thursday from 8.30am to 9.30am on both days. The programme commenced with a formal welcome by our school Principal, Mrs Bindu Sehgal ma’am. It was followed by the introduction of the class teacher by the Vice Principal, Mrs Hemalatha Murlidharan ma’am. She also spoke about the important aspects related to the functioning of our school. Later the school counsellor Mrs Surpreet Oberoi, shared a few points to help parents prepare their child for formal school. Lastly, the session concluded with answering the queries of the parents. The parents were then directed towards the ‘C’ Block, to meet the respective class teachers.
