 LEARNING OUTCOMES AT PREPARATORY STAGE:

PERSPECTIVES AND POSSIBILITIES

“Learning is not the product of teaching. Learning is the product of activity of learners. -  John Holt

The Department of Education organized a group discussion on 8th February,2024 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on the topic “LEARNING OUTCOMES AT PREPARATORY STAGE: PERSPECTIVES AND POSSIBILITIES” at Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya Delhi Cantt. It was attended by Ms.Boski Sharma and Ms. Smriti Nayyar.

The eminent speaker for the workshop was Ms Mayank Bhardwaj, a PhD Research scholar from the Department of Education (C.I.E.), University of Delhi.  She conducted a focused group discussion for the attendees for a deeper understanding and better clarity on the subject matter. The idea was to delve deeper into the participants’ perspective and their understanding on the whole gamut of learning outcomes at a preparatory stage.

The themes around which discussion took place were as follows:

·       Idea of minimum levels of learning, learning objectives, learning outcomes.

·       Experiences of teachers and school administrators about learning outcomes.

·       Perspectives on teachers’ autonomy/ accountability.

·       Need of pedagogical modifications and changes in the classroom.

·       Issues surrounding assessment strategies and further possibilities for assessment of learning outcomes.

·        The participants were provided with a handmade folder with learning outcomes, minimum levels of learning and learning objectives for English and Mathematics to read and understand the difference between the same, to reflect upon which one is better and advanced by sharing their thoughts and experiences about the same. The whole-hearted participation by the participants helped each one of them to reflect upon the following points:

·       Learning outcomes are statement of the knowledge, skills and abilities individual students should possess and can demonstrate upon completion of a learning experience or sequence of learning experiences.

·       It aims to enhance the quality of learning in schools, by enabling teachers to ascertain learning skills more accurately and take corrective steps without delay and provide effective learning opportunities to all students including children with special needs.

·       Learning outcomes are more child-centered and improved than the Learning objectives.

·       The learning outcomes for each class will not only help teachers to focus on teaching-learning, but also facilitate parents/guardians, community members and state functionaries in their role towards ensuring quality education in schools throughout the nation.

·       Pedagogy is improvised to involve kids, make it engaging instead of lecture-based approach. Pedagogy depends upon the availability of resources, infrastructure in the various schools.

·       Teachers and educators should get regular training sessions with practical hands-on experiences to use the resources to implement them in school. Training to execute NEP Policy, designing and reflecting the learning outcomes on the basis of their level of students, knowledge about Artificial intelligence should be conducted.

·       Kinds of assessment (Formative and summative), enrichment projects, pen-paper test, quiz etc. were discussed to check the achievement of learning outcomes.

·       Reflection on improvisation of NCERT books which more filler activities, contexts etc.

·       Autonomy and accountability of teachers is not only for the principal of the school but it’s a reflection that how many learning outcomes are measurable, how many children have achieved those learning outcomes.

It was an enriching experience for all the attendees.
